The draft resolution establishing 6.21 international yoga day was sponsored by India and supported by 175 member states. The proposal was first put forward by Indian prime minister narendra modi at the 69th session of the UN general assembly. Yoga embodies the unity of mind and body, thought and action... This holistic approach benefits our health and well-being. Yoga is not just exercise; It's a way to find yourself, the world and nature all in one."
The resolution states that "it is important for individuals and all people to make healthier choices and adopt healthier lifestyles". In this regard, the who has urged member states to encourage more physical activity. Physical inactivity currently ranks among the top 10 causes of death worldwide and is a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.
But yoga is more than just a physical activity. Before voting on the resolution, general assembly President Sam kutesa stressed: "yoga has been practiced by people from all walks of life for centuries, recognizing its unique mind-body identity. Yoga creates harmony between thought and action."
